The Awareness Alliance is a collaboration between the ICPCN and the Fondazione Maruzza Lefebvre DÓvidio Onlus (Maruzza Foundation) aimed at increased awareness and access to children’s palliative care worldwide through advocacy and communication activities.
The ICPCN and Maruzza FOundation share the common vision of a world where palliative care is available to all children who need it and that specialised palliative care should be the right of every child with a life-limiting condition.
Research has shown that an estimated 20 million children worldwide are affected by illnesses and conditions that threaten their lives or which will inevitably lead to death in childhood or early adulthood. Child-specific palliative care, providing flexible, holistic healthcare and support, provides the most appropriate solutions to the multiple care needs of this vulnerable population and their families.
The ICPCN and the Fondazione Maruzza launched the Awareness Alliance on 19 November at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Congress on Paediatric Palliative Care – A Global Gathering held in Rome in November 2014 at the Auditorium Antonianum in Central Rome. Speaking at the launch, Sylvia Lefebvre D’Ovidio, Director of the Fondazione Maruzza said that it would be an honour to work together with ICPCN. She was very excited about the alliance as she felt that advocacy and communication would be very important to achieve the vision of the two organisations.
Joan Marston, ICPCN’s Chief Executive, commenting on the alliance said, “As the ICPCN we believe that palliative care is the right of every child with a life-limiting condition. Fondazione Maruzza shares ICPCN’s belief and by working together, complementing each other’s strengths and building the global voice for children’s palliative care, we are a step further in reaching the more than 20 million children who need palliative care across the world.”
A child’s right to palliative care
The International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) and the Maruzza Foundation share a common vision of a world where every child and family facing life-limiting conditions or life threatening illness will have access to quality hospice and palliative care. Both organisations believe this to be the right of every child. To improve access to palliative care for these children and families, the ICPCN and Maruzza Foundation will collaborate on certain defined activities with the objective of improving access to quality palliative care.
